Who is Bernie? Bernie is my beloved dining table over which I pined for at least a year before taking him home with me. I did not name him. I would not have chosen Bernie. Why didn't I rename him? Bernie is one of a kind, and I figured it would strip him of some of his uniqueness. Honestly, I didn't give it much thought until I started talking about this blog series. People made faces when I said his name is Bernie thus confirming the unique name fit the unique table. Perhaps they were making faces at the idea of my dining table having any name. Perhaps those that don't know me as well as some were scrunching their face as they realized I may be a little strange. So be it. Iam. But this isn't about me. It's about Bernie.
Everyday I learn more about Bernie. Some things make me smile like his very subtle tonal variations when viewed from the top of the stairs. It's as if he has three panels on his surface and the middle one is slightly lighter, but the panels are seamless so I'm left smiling and baffled. Other traits leave me baffled and downright upset like how he seems to be chipped in places I never noticed before. Full disclosure: I have a toddler and spend a lot of time sitting on the floor near Bernie and see things that nobody else will. Nonetheless, it makes me anxious about how gracefully Bernie will age. I'd like to keep him for a very long time. So, I recite the label that comes with all my leather handbags to make me feel better: "This product is handmade of unique materials thus the markings and imperfections give it its character." Oh Bernie, you character!
Now that you understand Bernie a bit more, I hope you are excited to see him all gussied up for the holidays, seasons, and wonderful life events he will be a part of this year now that he is a part of our home.
